Information for Candidates During Virtual Interviews

Many University departments are conducting phone or Zoom video interviews.

Tips for Video Interviews

Visit the Zoom video conferencing website or download the app in advance of the interview. Do a trial run with a friend or family member to make sure your equipment is working properly.
Avoid noise distractions by finding a quiet room where background noise will not be an issue.
Ensure you have proper lighting. If the lighting is too bright, you may be hurting the other person’s eyes. If the lighting is too dark, they will have to strain in order to see you. You can log on to Zoom and view yourself in the camera to determine if the lighting is right.
Check your eye contact and project your voice. Remember to look at the camera instead of the screen so it appears you are talking directly to the individual. Speak clearly so the microphone picks up your voice and the interviewer does not have to strain to hear you.
Dress for success. Treat this interview with the same level of professionalism and importance as you would a face-to-face interview.
Be prepared for possible technical issues. If you encounter video or audio issues during the interview, do not be hesitant to ask your interviewer to repeat a question or statement.
