June is Men’s Health Month

During the month of June, men are encouraged to set goals for their health and wellness and begin to create a roadmap for achieving those goals. It is also a time to get educated on health issues men are faced with and raise awareness of age-appropriate preventive screenings, including prostate cancer. Memorial Sloan Kettering recommends having a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test to check for prostate cancer at around age 45. There are several reasons why screenings can be very helpful:

  • The results are a good predictor of your lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer.
  • Men who are at the highest risk will be monitored more closely.
  • Prostate cancer is more curable when it’s caught early.

Talk with your doctor about when to start and stop PSA screenings, and how often you should have them.

Princeton offers MSK Direct, through the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, to provide direct access to a team of professionals who specialize in cancer care. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, you can call the Princeton University dedicated MSK Direct line toll-free at (844) 303-2123, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or visit the MSK Direct for Princeton website.

Take Care of Your Skin

More than 3.5 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States. Most skin cancers can be detected early through skin examinations, so it is important to be screened on a regular basis or if you see a change in size or color to an existing mole. Be sure to wear sunscreen and protective clothing while outdoors.
