Short Term Disability Plan

When employees are unable to perform their jobs for eight consecutive days due to an illness, an injury, or a disability that is not related to work, Princeton University provides an income replacement plan. This is a private New Jersey State-approved short term disability plan that provides income to benefits-eligible employees according to a formula.

Description of Benefit

When employees are unable to perform their jobs for eight consecutive days due to an illness, an injury, or a disability that is not related to work, Princeton University provides an income replacement plan. 

This is a private New Jersey State-approved short term disability plan that provides income to benefits-eligible employees according to a formula.

Features

  • The first 12 weeks of disability are paid at 100% of base salary and the remaining 14 weeks are paid at 75% of base salary in any 12-month period.
  • Job protection is provided during an approved short-term disability in accordance with FMLA.
  • Faculty and staff continue to receive contributions into the Princeton University Retirement Plan based on the short term disability income.

Rules

  • Benefits paid according to the Princeton formula do not exceed 26 weeks during any 12-month period.
  • Benefits concurrent with federal FMLA
  • Benefits for individuals during an unpaid leave of absence or scheduled non-working periods, which applies to employees working less than a 12-month schedule, paid at the lesser of the New Jersey State rate or two-thirds of base salary, regardless of when the illness or injury begins
  • Probationary and casual hourly workers paid by the University at the State rate

Cost

This plan is provided at no cost to employees though the short term disability benefit is taxable for federal and FICA purposes. State income taxation varies by state.

Eligibility

Faculty and staff are eligible for this plan as of their first day of work. Refer to policy 3.1.9 Short Term Disability for more information on the full eligibility criteria.

Deadlines & Application Process

Employees must submit the Short Term Disability Application and completed medical certificate to the Office of Employee Heath within the first two weeks of absence from work.

If there are any discrepancies between the information in this publication, verbal representations, and the plan documents, the plan documents always govern. Although Princeton intends to continue these benefits, the University reserves the right to amend or terminate these plans at any time.
