Back-Up Care Advantage Program

Bright Horizons.

The Bright Horizons Back-up Care Advantage Program provides faculty and staff with back-up care when there are temporary disruptions in one’s child, adult, and/or elder caregiving arrangements that would otherwise prevent fulfilling work obligations. Faculty and staff receive 100 hours of back-up care each calendar year. Caregivers are FBI background checked, CPR and first aid certified, licensed, and insured. Child care centers must meet or exceed state licensing regulations and guidelines, including health and safety standards, and staff-to-child ratios.

Care Options
  • Center-based Care: Bright Horizons coordinates and confirms care at an in-network approved day care or elder care center
  • In-home Care: Bright Horizons coordinates and confirms in-home care with an in-network caregiver
  • Out-of-Network Care (OONC): Faculty and staff arrange for and pay a caregiver and submit a reimbursement form to Bright Horizons
  • Princeton University subsidizes the cost of the Back-up Care Advantage Program. Home care is $4 per hour for up to three dependents, and $2 per hour per child for center-based care. The University’s subsidized portion for back-up care is $34.09 per hour based on the type of care provided, the subsidy may be reflected in the paycheck as imputed income.
  • Elder care is considered taxable income.
  • Child care, when used in the conjunction with a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account, may be treated as taxable income.
  • The program requires scheduling a minimum of four hours per day of care.
  • Out-of-Network Care (OONC) counts towards the 100 hours, $100 per day is the maximum reimbursement amount allowed. In order to be reimbursed, employees must notify Bright Horizons they are using this option before care occurs.

Eligibility begins on the first of the month coincident with or next month following the employee’s date of hire. Refer to the Benefits Eligibility Tool.
