Departments interested in arranging a wellness seminar should email Lynn Herbine. Behavior Change 1. Why Is Health Coaching for Me? Attendees learn about the health coaching program and what to expect; how it works, including how the Health Coach talks with participants about different areas of health to set and reach health goals; and how to begin the process. 2. Setting Goals and Sticking to Them This seminar focuses on how to set goals using the SMART approach. Once these goals are in place, attendees learn how to monitor and track progress, modify them as needed, and reward successes. This seminar describes how to utilize these additional strategies to help individuals stay on track with their health goals. Family Health 1. Supporting the Health of Your Family: Family Fun, Family Food, Family Fitness Health is a family matter. This seminar focuses on creative ways to make nutrition, exercise, and spending time together a priority to help participants maintain the health of the family. 2. Focus on Prevention: Men’s Health The seminar focuses on general recommendations for blood work and screening tests for everyone, talking with one’s doctor about test results, and general recommendations for staying healthy. In addition, learn how the specific health needs of men differ and the additional tests that are recommended. 3. In addition, learn how the health needs of women differ and the additional tests that are recommended. Tobacco Cessation 1. Developing an Effective Quit Plan for Tobacco Quitting tobacco use is a process and everyone has one’s own path to first deciding to quit and then reaching the tobacco-free goal. During this seminar, attendees learn about the effects of nicotine, the elements of a solid quit plan, and how developing a plan and getting support can help one quit for good. 2. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or Helper Medications to Support a Quit Plan Nicotine replacement therapy can be helpful to individuals who are trying to quit tobacco. This seminar describes the different nicotine replacement therapy options available, how they are used and how they can be incorporated into a solid tobacco quit plan. Prescription medications are also discussed. General Health & Prevention 1. Back Health Most individuals get back pain at some point in their lives. In most cases, back pain develops through repetitive activities such as sitting at a computer or lifting and carrying that may produce tension and muscle. This seminar focuses on ways to prevent back pain and maintain back health. 2. Sleep Your Way to Better Health Sleep is important to many aspects of one’s health. It is not just the quantity of sleep, but also the quality of sleep that matters. This seminar focuses on how sleep affects health and explores strategies to help attendees improve the sleep they are getting. 3. Know Your Numbers One’s numbers from a simple blood test can be a snapshot of one’s health and risk for diseases such as diabetes and high cholesterol. This seminar helps attendees understand their numbers, the impact of things such as waist circumference and blood pressure on their health, and what numbers say about their current health and risk of developing health problems in the future. 4. Skin and Sun Safety Learn how to take care of the largest organ in the body, skin. Understand how the skin works and why it is important to one’s health. Learn the essentials of caring for one’s skin in the summer, how to protect oneself, and how to decrease the risk of skin cancer. Clinical Condition/Risk 1. Blood Pressure Blood pressure is an important component of health. High blood pressure, especially when it occurs over time, can damage the body and cause complications. This seminar focuses on the causes of high blood pressure, the effects of high blood pressure over time, and ways that high blood pressure can be treated. 2. Diabetes Diabetes is a condition that leads to too much sugar in the blood. If not managed, diabetes can lead to serious health problems. This seminar focuses on understanding diabetes, the different types of diabetes, ways that it can be treated, and the importance of following one’s doctor’s plan. 3. Heart Health Caring for one’s heart through lifestyle choices is the secret weapon to preventing heart disease. This seminar focuses on how changes to some of one’s lifestyle behaviors, including nutrition, exercise, and stress management, can reduce risk and lead to a healthier individual. 4. Metabolic Syndrome Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors that increase one’s risk for heart disease and other health problems. This seminar focuses on the factors that contribute to metabolic syndrome and how making key lifestyle changes can help control, and even prevent, developing metabolic syndrome. 5. Cholesterol Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. This seminar focuses on the health effects of too much cholesterol in the blood and ways to lower one’s cholesterol through diet and exercise. Physical Activity 1. Current Recommendations for Exercise and How to Meet those Goals During this seminar, attendees are introduced to the current exercise guidelines for adults. They learn how to identify the different forms of exercise – cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility – and begin to explore ways to incorporate these exercises into their daily routine. 2. Cardiovascular Exercise During this seminar, attendees learn why it is important to engage in cardiovascular exercise, the benefits of cardiovascular exercise, and ways to add cardiovascular exercise to their weekly routine. They learn the types of exercises that are considered cardiovascular exercises and are given the tools to explore what exercises are right for them. 3. Strength Training This seminar focuses on the importance of strength training, the health benefits of strength training, and options for incorporating strength training into one’s exercise routine. 4. Flexibility – Stretching and Yoga This seminar focuses on flexibility as the third component of a well-rounded exercise program. Participants learn the health benefits of incorporating flexibility exercises into their weekly exercise routine. Nutrition 1. Current Recommendations for Nutrition: Choose My Plate During this seminar, attendees are introduced to the current nutrition guidelines for healthy eating, Choose My Plate. They learn how to determine their calorie needs to guide them in eating the recommended amounts of each of the food groups, i.e., fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and fats. 2. Adding More of What You Need: Incorporating Vegetables and Fruits During this seminar, participants learn why it is important to get enough fruits and vegetables in their diet. The seminar focuses on creative and budget-conscious ways they can eat more of them. 3. Getting Less of What You Don’t Need: Reducing Sugar, Salt, and Fat This seminar focuses on the importance of reducing the amount of added sugar, salt, and fat from one’s diet. Learn how much to eat and get tips and support for making better food choices. Weight Management 1. Weight Management Maintaining current weight and losing weight requires attention to both what one eats and how active one is. This seminar focuses on strategies for weight management, including practical ways to change behaviors around eating and exercise that help individuals lose weight safely and effectively. 2. Portion Control for Weight Management This seminar focuses on eating the right amount of each of the food groups to maintain, gain, or lose weight. While foods in each of the food groups are important, eating the right amount of them is also important for overall health. 3. Emotional Eating This seminar focuses on understanding the causes of emotional eating and how to manage these to gain better control over food. Learn how to increase awareness about emotional eating, identify triggers, and develop a practical approach to decrease emotional eating, improve nutrition, and lose weight. Stress 1. Understanding Stress and Its Impact on Health During this seminar, attendees are introduced to the research exploring the impact of stress on their physical and emotional health. Each person responds to stress differently. This seminar helps individuals identify the main sources of their stress and “what you look like when you get stressed.” 2. Proven Stress Management Techniques Just as everyone responds to stress differently, there is no single approach to stress management that works for each person.
